If you have a job, count your blessings. If you got laid off right now, you would not be able to repeat your luck up till now. If you just graduated and looking for work, and not on F1 visa, I'm sorry, you are screwed for the next few years. Look to wash dishes as a stop gap for a while. It's going to be a rough ride. The Visa market is wide open again after suffering in 2018-2020. The dent that was put in the H1B/H4 visas back then, led to a surge in US hiring which peaked in 2021. Your multiple job offers were due to this. Your high TC was thanks to this time. You can kiss that time, and any future prospects, goodbye. We are back to 2008 job market where companies only want H1B. The tech job market demands for US talent is gone, again. Hoping the next administration will bring the axe down on these programs that flood our tech markets with warm bodies. https://youtu.be/ptqFdNiaysg?si=FZuJ8zeD_SWOV9vO ≈========≈ [EDIT] Some recent examples of this on Blind are below. So long.
Seen both versions of this story. Some people keep getting jobs and some applying 1500 jobs. Where is the market really?
Market is good bro
I was around in 2008. I remember when it started to get bad, companies were on the tail end of hiring, trying to backfill reqs. They had a silent rule not to hire laid off people, only to hire experienced people, and the reqs got out of whack, demanding 5 years experience with things that only existed for 3 years (per se). People out of work had a hard time, but those with work had it easier. Then the backfills were filled, and any new job was just some custom crafted Visa only job. The whole time, FAANG was on TV, pleading to the government and public for more Foreign workers because there was a 'skills gap'. Just PR bullshit. This is happening again.
Then why is meta paying 500k for E5?
2021 the tech market peaked due to Visa restrictions. This jacked up the demand for US tech workers, which made offers like this sky high. With post covid inflation, this isn't as much as you think anymore. It's like $200k from 2010.
I an getting many interviews.
By the way, Visa body shops successfully sued the US government around 2022 (they constantly are suing to destroy restrictions) and broke down the 'self sponsor' rule. This allows them a loophole to bench Visa workers. This administration is Visa friendly, so the floodgates are open again, more than ever. What do we have? Mass layoffs 2023. More layoffs in 2024. People are looking for work for 6 months to a year with hundreds and hundreds of applications to get a measley interview. Resume hit rates went from 100% in 2021 to less than 5% in summer 2024.
Market is way better than last year. I've been getting ~10% response rate to just my online applications (just cold applying via web sites, no referrals). I've talked to at least 20 companies since May 2024.
Market is better in terms of interviewing, but offers are harder to get. I know because I got offers last year, and no offer this year yet
There was a disillusionment about AI capabilities for writing code. Most companies stopped hiring junior engineers. It is obvious by now that the replacement is not happening. Hence the uptick in hiring despite OP’s opinion. My LinkedIn is full of managers who are hiring.
What are you even trying to say? I thought AI can write simple scripts/basic code quite well. Only a matter of time when we all become prompt engineers. Would expect that to be happening at Meta already?
Agreed on your AI take fellow Metamate. Disagree on any uptick in Hiring. Literally last week, the jobs report was revised and showed -30,000 jobs. We are contracting not expanding. Meanwhile. 85K new H1B waiting at the gates.
bs - have offers from two companies, market is quite okay, and interviewing for a few more. You need to have the skills.
how do you juggle two jobs? What if there’s meeting conflict that can be avoided?
Good for you. Keep the ball rolling.
