Revealed my NW to my wife, and I feel bad
Do you actually plan to save a bunch of money and retire before age 65? I don’t see that many engineers in their 50s+ relative to 20s-30s at growth or established companies large or small; maybe about 2/3 of the people 50+ who should be around are missing. Where did they go, what are they doing now? Is it somewhat different at older companies like SAP and oracle? Edit to add Tc: 280 Yoe: 8
Depends on the job market. I could theoretically FIRE at ~30 (28) given spending + family planning, but for now the plan is to keep working as long as I can stay in roles I’m happy with. From my POV, the FI point is much more important than the RE. I don’t mind work, but it allows me to enforce the things I care about (like WFH).
Mid fifties and planning to get out this year or next.
I think very few people can follow a FIRE path or retire before 65+. Maybe some of the really high earners but it will be a fraction of the tech workforce.
Even “only” saving 50% of take-home you can retire from 0 in ~15-20 years. Given the TC many have here, if you choose to live a median lifestyle for the area it’s not too difficult (eg take home on 200k TC is 135-150k and median pretax income is roughly half that in most areas).
