It is clear that Netflix seems to be the only top 10 tech company that generally does not hire new grads and junior engineers with under say 3 years of experience. Why? What makes them different from other companies like Google, Microsoft, and Apple? Where is this senior hiring philosophy coming from? Can a Netflix engineer explain?
Because manages don’t want to deal with career progression as it takes time and efforts. It’s an old lazy rule that isn’t changing due to managers pushback
Not having to worry about promotion(because there isn’t any other than management track) feel good
Its easier to manage if everyone is senior and if there are no promotions, the expectations are same for everyone and any deviation gets you fired. To some extent motivations of folks also stay the same
It’s also easier to onboard people because you’re hiring people who already have experience and the tools to hit the ground running and start executing and owning their work. Only hiring senior means productivity and velocity is far higher than hiring junior level and grooming them for 3-4 years to build up the career skills. I wouldn’t change it.
companies have a moral responsibility towards the tech community to hire and train juniors. think about if no one does this, then how will the community work? think of it like Seeders and Leechers in torrents. if everyone is a leecher, it wont work
Netflix isn’t like other companies. They survived the dot com bust and had to lay off 40% of the company to survive. By laying off the dead wood juniors and low performing employees, they thrived and innovated like never before and transformed the cloud and invented streaming techniques and open sourced all of it. Modern Netflix culture was born out of that. There is no moral responsibility to train up newbie juniors to succeed. That’s what the other guys do. I would never want this company to change. It’s culture is what makes this company what it is. Don’t like it, look elsewhere. Don’t apply. Don’t complain. This company clearly isn’t for you. If it changes, it would be no different than any other SV tech company and there would be no reason to want to stay here. No reason for the high comp. It would be no different then Disney+.

This is so toxic
While it’s not for everyone, I wouldn’t change it.
