My last job was at Dropbox. I was making $500K/yr. The WLB was pretty good, until the culture changed a year ago. I was terminated a few months ago. So naturally I started applying for big tech jobs like Meta and Google. Not much luck... Reasons to Work in Big Tech -------------- Lately I’ve been thinking, is it even worth applying to big tech companies? The main reasons would be 1) high TC 2) interesting and engaging work 3) growth opportunities My Priorities ----------------- While all of those sounds great, they don’t necessarily align with my life priorities right now. For 13+ years my self worth has been centered around my value at work. I am relatively good at what I do, and I earned good money doing it. But it made me incredibly miserable. So, now my main priorities are: 1) achieve WLB - I don't want to work > 40h/w. I don't want "grind" culture. I just want to do my work and leave @ 5PM 2) join communities, make friends, and build an identity outside of work 3) develop hobbies and interests outside of tech In fact it can be argued that an engaging job would make it that much more difficult to separate my identity from my work. I also don’t need an astronomical TC. $250K is probably enough for my needs, especially if I live with a community, which is one of my goals anyways. BORING COMPANIES ================= I asked ChatGPT to generate a list of such companies. If you work for one of these I'd love to hear your experience. Or, if you have suggestions lmk! Do not give out our secrets like this. Let the grinders grind
The fact that it got capital one on the first answer shows me AI is definitely coming for my job. Then again, when my job is updating bogie files, am I a senior software engineer?
You forgot the most important one… https://www.boringcompany.com
Watch out for the CEO, he might literally screw you.
Salesforce is one of them only if you land in the correct team. Some can get away with 20 hour weeks easy, other teams are forced to put over 60 a week. Culture is garbage and morale is low, but if you are in a good team the WLB is crazy good and the pay is not bad.
Which one are those good teams at Salesforce?
Microsoft?
Think again
