Hi everyone, need a little bit of advice on how market myself and what would be a better career direction to take for future at this stage of my career !! - TIA Current Total Comp: About 155K (in Texas) Total YOE in IT: 17 years - Initial 5 years: Consulting and Tech Services for Clients, - Next 6-7: as Development Tech Lead (mainly project executions with technical designs, architectures, light coding) - Last 5-6 years as DevSecOps Lead (mainly learning new DevOps Tools, methodologies, getting more cloud native, leading Agile teams, project executions, designing for better DevOps and Cloud Native S/W and Infrastructure Architectures including App Modernizations and even more light coding, focussing more on big picture type of things) In this job market it is getting increasingly difficult to land right offers something that can get me to break into least 200K TC ? Not sure what is a good compensation range to even aim for also. (Am I low balling or aiming high in this market?) P.S. - I do want to get out my current company as the career growth is stagnant here and they don't even discuss career path with you. So what would be a better career path to take in Non FAANG companies or non consulting companies with good WLB and opportunity to learn and grow ? Not really interested in SRE roles or Build & Release (Deployment Engineer) kind of roles. Also I don't think I have the time on the side to practice and get better to crack coding interviews or leetcode style, to become a full time SWE but I am definitely open to developing 25-50% of time in the new role if it allows. Options I am considering based on different job posting titles etc: - Solutions Architect/Cloud Architect - DecSecOps with CyberSecurity Teams - DevOps with Cloud Engineering (seems more sysadmin roles) - Cloud Platform Engineering - DevOps Lead( DevOps Manager) - Development Manager #tech #devops #cloud #aws #azure #career
It almost reads like you’d prefer a TPM role - technical but non-coding.
Hi Thanks for pointing it out... I just wanted to mention that I am open to coding roles as well which I love doing today as well but due to my current responsibilities I don't have enough time to write code so it is harder for me to crack any of the coding interviews
i think these days i’m more leaning toward hiring jack of all trade senior/staff SWEs. it’s much easier to align on architectural decisions when talking to people that code day to day too. i think since you don’t want to code, devops might be more suitable i’m a engineering lead at startup. previously team lead at adobe
Thanks I am new to Blind and also new to the current industry trends, so what would generally the amount of coding a senior or principal engineers expected to do when they also have responsibilities of architecture or leading team members or mentoring junior team members .... Or am I far off ?
I fit your description perfectly. How willing are you to hire me ? I don't want to leetcode, you can interview me in every other way.
If you have DevSecOps experience, do you have a security clearance? If you're a citizen you should seriously consider it. Should be really easy to break 200k with a Top secret as either a SA or DevOps lead
Unfortunately I don't have security clearance
Very hot space with a huge shortage of jobs so I’m surprised you can’t find something in the $200K TC range at this level. Check out security specific companies since they tend to pay a premium
Thanks for the advice! Yes most offers I am getting are bottoming out in 160K - 170K range ... Even I was surprised to hear Capital One was willing to pay only 160-165K for a DevOps Engineer role.
