FB recruiter said, based on my current role, I fit in between E5 and E6, I have the option to choose any position to interview. I am confused what should I choose, if I choose E6 the bar might be high and I might not get selected, or if I get selected, I might not be able to perform to the expectation of E6. I am currently a principal engineer and my work spans across my team only, not at the org level, though some work might have impacts to org level too but mainly I am 100% working for my team only. Based on this I have a few questions: 1) Is E5 a tech lead role or E6 is a tech lead role. 2) Does E6 role requires working across the org, or at the team level only? 3) How much % of time E6 spends on coding Vs E5 4) If you can share more details of each role that would be great, as in what is expected of E6 vs E5 5) Final question - should I interview for E5 or E6? project size 23, direct team size 10, TC 400, yoe 17 #software #engineering #swe #facebook
Your yoe and size of your team?
Interview for E6, if you don’t make the bar for E6 they’ll anyways consider you for E5.
That's a good advise, but a counter argument - what if OP cracks the interview with good preparation and might get lucky too, but once OP joins at E6 he/she finds that the role is more demanding and much more is expected of that role , I think it is fair to know about the expectations before joining at a role. I am also in similar situation would like to know more about the expectations from the role.
expectation: enslave humanity
ok, I'll rephrase the decision here: do you want to earn 400k or 600k? Latter being E6. I'm kinda in a similar position (not with FB, but in terms of my career) where I can interview E5 or E6. There's no way I would voluntary interview for E5 given the chance to interview for E6. if I interview for e5, get an offer and accept it'd always ask myself "what if" for the next 2-3 years at fb
Any idea about the scope of job for e5 vs e6, as OP asked?
It really depends on how big your team is. If your team is like 20 people. Then it’s fine to be an E6 who only work within the team. E5 is a tech lead, who can drive roadmap, cross team project, and E6 is someone who has more industry insight, and lead bigger (4 ppl+ )project. 5 do things with little guidance from manager/ skip. 6 do whatever they want. Although I have seen some internal 5s who are much better than external hire 6s, because they have more context.

Cannot answer most of the Qs but interviews can be cracked if you commit hard. Also consider TC - would you even leave for E5 or does it have to be E6? I would be leaning for going all in on E6 but take that with a pinch of salt :)
It’s hard to crack behavioural unless you performed at E6 level before. Sounds like OP is really in between 5-6, only thing that might bite OP is lack of prior x-team impact.
