Laid-off Meta cafeteria workers ask for the same severance as the company’s employees

At first glance I thought this was ridiculous proposition. But at a second thought those people also worked hard and contributed th eir part in building the company culture, and they sure do need the money much more than the engineers who make more in a month than they do in a year. One can argue that their contribution isn't as much as an engineer, but their pay check already reflects that. Assuming a cafeteria worker makes $15 an hour, severance for each month of their pay is barely $2500. What are your thoughts? Do they deserve it? https://www.marketwatch.com/amp/story/laid-off-meta-cafeteria-workers-ask-for-the-same-severance-as-the-companys-employees-8b1e6dbd

If they worked for Meta sure….but they don’t! They work for the company that contracts out cafeteria services! That’s like if I got laid off at Walmart and wanted severance from Target

You do realize this whole subcontracting business is a ploy to keep paying them starvation wages and deny them rights to complain.

SAP Pennytrade OP Mar 1, 2023

Well we all know that those are just cost cutting schemes by the corporations. In these cases they did work at Meta and served Meta employees

Microsoft arjitsingh Mar 1, 2023

At first I laughed then I regretted when I kept reading the post. They deserve better salaries especially when they work at Tech Giants that give free food

Bet an entire kitchen staff could be severed for the same dollar amount as 2 staff engineers. Zuck should do it to prove his elite ceo status.

Apple uEnP71 Mar 1, 2023

I think it should be illegal to use staffing companies as cut outs to avoid paying full benefits. This is endemic throughout the industry where most Amazon drivers and workers don’t actually work for Amazon - if you wear an Amazon logo vest, have an Amazon logo van, and deliver for Amazon - you should be directly employed by them not by some shiesty fly by night corporate shell company that acts as a cut out for lawsuit liability and benefit reduction.

Yeah and if you’re making iPhones all day you should be an Apple employee

AT&T beepbeepbeep Mar 2, 2023

They are also doing it to block unionization. Quite effective, as you see here.

Goldman Sachs kithinf Mar 1, 2023

they are not contractors?

SAP Pennytrade OP Mar 1, 2023

They are contractors. But the argument is whether they deserve the severance because they've made their contribution to the company just like any other employees.

Goldman Sachs kithinf Mar 1, 2023

in that case they ain’t even laid off in the law’s eyes. maybe they get something from the publicity tho.

Meta jbvH24 Mar 1, 2023

They deserve severance. They work so fucking hard and get very little credit.

Baptist Health System rockets55 Mar 1, 2023

Meta am_ver Mar 1, 2023

They raided the micro kitchen without shame. The MK next to 16 taco place was a disaster. They were never employees and they knew what could happen. I’ve seen sbm employees abuse things as well

Meta awakt Mar 1, 2023

Oh no th MK is being abused oh no

Meta awakt Mar 1, 2023
