So Trump is right, again, on illegal aliens being rapists?
I recently accepted an offer from an international company that has offices in the US and Canada. I'm a Canadian and the role they hired for is in the US. However, due to COVID the company agreed on starting me in Canada and then having me come into the States once things are fine. They made me sign a Canadian offer and an American one. The American one didn't include the RSU amount, as they said the RSU amount will update once I move to the States and after going through performance review. - sketchy thing #1 The offer never included a start date, as they said they need to get approval from immigration first. - sketchy thing #2 After the offer was signed, they said I can't actually start working until I have my American visa, even though they have a Canadian office. So I have to wait for the visa process to finish before beginning working for them, even though I'll be starting work in Canada. - sketchy thing #3 Now that the visa has been approved, I have to activate it by crossing the border, after which I can come back to Canada immediately and begin working. - sketchy thing #4 Am I being paranoid or are these things actually sketchy? I have never been in a visa situation before, so not sure what the norms are, but things don't make sense to me and wanted to get other people's point of view. My fear is also of the tax implications I'll face. Thanks ya'll! #facebook #apple #amazon #google #microsoft #lyft #airbnb #spotify #slack #immigration #offer #canada #tnvisa #workvisa
Visa things can be pretty sketchy to be honest, and I’ve found companies have actually no clue what they’re doing. However if you’re Canadian you should be able to work in Canada immediately
Yes, I am, that's why I'm so confused! And they haven't given any explanation as to why we're taking these steps.
You’re being paranoid. Except for #1, all other points seem legit. Immigration complications are real.
I will be getting an updated contract with the start date on it. Should I push for having the American RSU revealed even though they've explained that they can't provide it and it'll be updated after year end performance review?
Yes. Ask them to put a clause that the American RSUs will only be granted if you move to USA. If you need to stay in Canada, they can reduce the # of RSUs. About the start date, it’s normal to mention that the start date is dependent on approval of visa or clearance of immigration blockers.
Seems legit except that RSU thingy. Get everything in writing so that you can escalate later if need be. Visa and tax issues are sketchy and complicated.
Not sure why other people find it legit. If you are canadian in canada, I dont know why they need you to have US visa to start. Unless they want to make sure for later stage, it makes zero sense. Not including start date is kinda okay. But they could have included it and said that date is subject to change based on immigration status. I would atleast seek some explanation.
I've tried and I've gotten nothing so far. External immigration company handling my visa - I ask them, they've been great with responding and can answer everything US and visa related, but say you need to ask your company when it comes to working in Canada. Internal immigration team for the company - they seem confused and have ghosted me for the longest time. Recruiter - doesn't know either and always refers to the immigration team to get details. It's just a giant vicious cycle.
2, 3 and 4 are legit
Why are 2,3,4 legit?
If you work for a US company on US payroll and pay US taxes, doesn’t matter where you live and perform your work, you need to have a US working visa. So 3, 4 is legit process for Canadian. Start date needs to be issued after visa date is approved. So in this case, the guy will be reissued an other contract which include the official start date. Nothing to worry about 2
