Trying to calculate impact of chatgpt to the tech industry. So far my assessment is that chatgpt helps with quick language lookups (for eg, how to print URL in golang and you get single perfect answer within 30s), breaking writer's block, strategic recommendation (what is cellular architecture) and faster learning (what is linear regression in simple words). Basically, this would have taken me a few minutes/upto an hour to manually do google search and get these answers per day. So, best case I am saving 1 hr per day with chatgpt. Also, adding search fatigue to the mix, it helps me focus into other things per day as well, adding another hand wavy 30 min gains. Overall best case, 1.5 hr productivity gains. This is a compounding productivity gain as I am making faster and more well informed decisions per day. Overall increasing productivity to ~20% best case (1.5hr/8hr + compounding round up). This means if tech employees adopt chatgpt as their side kick, we won't require new employees to keep up with the growth for a few years just by these productivity gains. Increase in productivity and overall growth slow down due to recession would equate to employees finding it even harder to find jobs. This would hold until we enter into next growth cycle and we open more surfaces to innovate. I feel this might be step function increase in productivity that we saw after PCs and internet. I also think general consultants, education (knowledge based industries in general) would be hitting the hardest with this innovation as we feed more data and the tool provides best judgements to an average person. p75+ talent is fine for now (at least), hence keep learning/evolving! What are your thoughts? Usual chatgpt trollers invited too. TC: 511K (paper included) YoE: 10 #chatgpt #openai #futureofeverything
What’s the breakdown of stripe TC? When they made my offer they inflated the shit out of the stocks value. They showed me a cap sheet that showed how much my stock would be worth at 200b-2t instead of current value 🤣🤣🤣
Prob around 300k paper $
Still dope
How can one write a book using chatgpt? What are the tools and ways of the trade?
Keep on asking follow up questions or suggestion. You'll keep going down the rabbit hole.
It can also write an extended summary of a hypothetical book. You may need to pretend it’s a real book and ask a couple of follow-up questions for this approach as well. The summary can then become an outline for someone to start iterating from.
Agreed overall. I have a lot of thoughts on this but they are pretty similar to yours. I’ve seen greater speed ups for some problems but not as much for others. It’s more useful for tasks like drafting a function or writing a regex pattern. It’s not as useful for system design, but it has some ability there and looks like it could really speed up the implementation once you have the design. I think tools like this will become the new industry standard. There may also be some amount of skill involved that would determine how much of a speed up each engineer will get. This will unlock a new wave of entrepreneurship but SWEs could be dependent on the next wave of founders to make the next growth cycle possible.
Also, Sam Altman’s interviews are pretty informative (CEO of OpenAI) and Neetcode has a short video on it that is interesting as well.
