I live in Phoenix and make about 140-145K as a DS. Certainly, this TC is super nice in city like Phoenix but this won't go a long way in a tech city like SF or NYC. This is why I have been afraid of making a move to those cities since that could mean I might have to take a hit on my lifestyle which I'm not sure I want to. I might make a move to NY in a couple of years when my TC is good enough but not 100% sure. I'm asking you folks who live in those big cities, am I missing out on a lot of career growth? YOE: 2 TC: In the post
Depends on how much you want to push yourself? But if you are ambitious, and good at what you do, you’ll miss out a lot. I’m also not sure why you are waiting for your TC to be enough? It will probably increase a lot while you are making the move. (If comp was the only criteria, today you can probably find companies that can offer you a lot more with 2 YoE)
Comp is kind of the only criteria. With 2 YOE I'll probably qualify for L4. I saw the bands of L4 DS, the average base is somewhere around what my current base is (135K). With the same base there will be compromises I'll have to make like getting a roommate. That's why I was waiting to get my base up to 160-170. Am I missing something here?
Just get a job at AWS and you can work in Phoenix for double that…
Do you know what's the base for L4 DS at AWS?
DS (Data Scientist) L4 : 108K - 160K BASE | 169K - 206K TC L5 : 153K - 207K BASE | 251K - 323K TC L6 : 175K - 237K BASE | 348K - 511K TC
OP, yes you are missing out. Move to Bay Area asap
