My mom is decently smart. She has two masters and a PHD in biochemistry from India. She worked as an academic researcher for most of her life. We live in the Bay Area. We're all US citizens. She recently just completed her admin certificate in salesforce. She’s a good learner (she knows a bit of Python, testing, SAS, SAP as well) and THE hardest working person I know. The thing is she was originally from a village in India so though she speaks English very fluently, she’s not going to articulate like Churchill or write essays like Hemingway. She’s also probably not going to grind out leetcode or learn to code at this age. Her typing speed is also slacking, she’s like 20 wpm. She’s in her late 50’s. I want to help her find any decent job in tech or biotech. Pay doesn’t matter really. She’s very eager to learn and is willing to put in 12 hour days to succeed. We’re financially well off. Just trying to get her some exposure to the tech world and get her working so she becomes a bit more confident in herself. Any corporate job at any level will do honestly. Does anyone have any suggestions on how she could utilize her experience to get a job or any leads? Thanks a lot
She can’t really code at that level, but she can do Salesforce admin stuff. Her background is in biotech.
Has she tried to volunteer in library teaching others?
Yea she does stuff like that but I’m trying to get her a corporate job
Does she have a visa? She could apply for freelancing or a govt. job
She wants to be in tech or bio . In any capacity
You are looking to boost her confidence .. By helping her find a Corp job.. Without better context, I’m not sure that’s the right remedy to the problem
I think this is a good option for her to work remotely
She can work a contract job. The entry barrier for those is much lower. Then she can try to convert to full time with clients.
Any good ones you recommend?
Surely there is better work for a biochemistry PhD than a salesforce admin. There are plenty of biotech companies in the Bay Area, why not look there?
They’re notoriously ageist
Please see if she can do some work pro bono and on volunteering basis. The economy is hard and those financially in need of the pay should have the first right to jobs. No I am not a woke person or a socialist. My wife's return to work program has been stalled for until the economy improves. She helped her friend get the offer she got. The struggle is real.
There's enough work for everyone my friend. In any case, we don't really care too much about the offer, so it's fine.
There isn't in tech sector in this economy.
