Hello guys, Some personal reasons unfortunately forced me to leave my PhD two months ago from a top tier University in France. To stay broad, I was working on Explainable AI and had still two more years to go. We managed to publish a workshop paper though at a A conference. Before that I got a master’s degree in applied maths and multiple job experiences as a data scientist in different kind of companies. I also have multiple open source side projects that I documented. I am working now (hopefully temporarily) as a data scientist for a consulting firm but I really want to get back to research and a tech-first environment. I have two questions. The first one is what would be your advice to maximize my chances of getting into a research scientist or engineer at a FAANG company? I know that at Meta, PhD are a strong requirement for the research scientist and I am not sure they even hire non PhDs for this position. Microsoft on the other hand seems more flexible on this, I saw an offer requesting a Master’s degree and one year of research. Ideally I am looking for teams that are doing research on impactful open problems (Deepmind would be a dream) but I am open to work for applied science teams. Second question, can someone help me with a referral? I am happy to chat via DM or google meet if you think my profile could be a good fit for a team you know. Edit: definitely open to relocate to the US or UK Thank you for taking the time to read TC: 48k€ YoE: 2.5 #google #meta #amazon #microsoft #faang #openai #phd
It looks like you have solid credentials. I personally don’t know what hirings like outside of North America but it’s definitely not as strong as if you were in USA can’t help with referral since my company is trash but good luck!
I am definitely open to moving to North America
just apply online and go from there
Dm if you see a fit at TikTok, I can refer
Will do, I have seen multiple offers. Thanks!
I don’t think you will get research science or applied science roles at FAANG without PhD, at least not on any of the AI initiatives. Microsoft AI is just integrating the GPT APIs from OpenAI into Azure and Office offerings. They spent billions investing in OpenAI and have the rights to their models, weights, etc. Anything original they do internally would be a literal waste. Since you have a masters degree in applied mathematics and an AI background, try applying to data scientist roles first to break into the industry. From there you can build work experience and a financial cushion. With time you could finish your PhD or apply for an internal transfer.
Thanks for your answer, it makes sense. I heard that data scientists roles at FAANG were mostly really data analysts positions with little to no ML. From what you saw internally at Google, would you say it’s true? I was thinking research eng or ML eng positions but not sure though
Depends on the team/org. You can end up on a team doing SQL pipelines or a team doing real statical analysis to improve products and drive revenue growth. In general, DS role is the best way for you to get your foot in the door
Dm for Microsoft. Send link to your resume and job posts you’re interested in careers
Will do thanks!
bro there is literally never an easier time to publish papers in hci llm's, what the fuck are you thinking not finishing that phd i can think of 50 diff theses that could probs be finished in 2 years part time just because of how easy it would be to crank out papers on after work
I understand, I just couldn’t live off the PhD salary anymore and something personal came up and forced me to leave to get back to the industry. Although you got a point, I would love at some point to restart a PhD part time.
Did you or your partner get pregnant?
