Context: 24M I’m really sick of LA and want to move to NYC (where I grew up). I feel like i’m wasting my youth here. Problem is, the job market sucks right now and it’s unlikely i’m going to find an offer around my current TC. I’m in team matching for a couple companies which could get close but I have no idea if/when they will actually have headcount. I have a couple offers in the 250K-300K range which i’m trying to decide if I should accept even though it would be a big drop in TC and less interesting work. I could also wait to see if one of my pending offers goes through but there’s no telling how long that will take. Looking for some advice TC: 450K, 3 YOE (stock appreciation)
If you’re looking for situations that are moving your career forward, compare the TC w/o appreciation. This ensures you’re moving to a place that has similar pay expectations as your current employer (promotion, raise, etc). You aren’t likely to find roles that match the stock appreciation at your level of experience. New employers can’t/won’t match your pay based on how well your company did in the last 3 years. If your company had tanked, they’d still be making the same offers.
This is a good point, thanks. Without appreciation the offers are probably around the same or higher than what I would be making.
Good
If the goal is to date and enjoy your younger years, TC is secondary. Don’t be in debt, financial planning will take you a long way even if you save less bit prioritize your youth (your words).
Spacex pays 450k? Amazing!
Not at my level lol, the valuation just 5x’ed since I joined (although they probably get close for director/principal SWE roles)
What do you not like about LA?
My question as well. Isn’t LA better than NYC in general?
I have a bunch of reasons. - Family is in NYC - Lots of friends in NYC - Prefer living in an actual city, don’t like sitting in traffic or driving everywhere - NYC is closer to Europe - I prefer the dynamic in NYC (more young, smart and ambitious people) - I like having actual seasons, don’t mind snow - NYC has better food, better entertainment/nightlife And I could go on. A lot of this is personal preference.
pay cut, but move to a more expensive city..? up to you. The cost of living in New York, NY is 22.7% higher than in Los Angeles, CA. (see: https://www.salary.com/research/cost-of-living/compare/los-angeles-ca/new-york-ny#:~:text=The%20cost%20of%20living%20in%20New%20York%2C%20NY%20is%2022.7,your%20current%20standard%20of%20living.&text=Employers%20in%20New%20York%2C%20NY,employeers%20in%20Los%20Angeles%2C%20CA.)
yeah I know, hence my indecision
To be fair, NYC food cannot be compared with LA if you enjoy non- French/Italian food. Your TC can afford living comfortably in LA but paycut + more expensive city? Good luck.
what would you say the minimum TC is to live comfortably in NYC?
I would take it
Ok
