I have a fully remote job and am currently based in California. I'm considering moving to Austin, but it almost seems too good to be true. The rent is less than half of what I pay in the Bay Area, there's no state tax, and the cost of living is dirt cheap for a big city. I'm worried it might just be a mirage. What are your thoughts?
Why go to that shit hole
What is wrong with Austin? What am I missing?
You’ll notice no one really gives you a good comparison because they want to feel good about their choice to take the easy road and do nothing and to stay in the bay. People actually enjoying life in Austin aren’t on this site nearly as much because they are, ya know, doing things.
Would probably say the same about people constantly hyping Austin. A ton of people moving here just want to now justify/feel better about uprooting their lives & leaving behind their family/friends. Also, yeah, Austin has things to do, but it's not even in the same ballpark compared to what most big cities have to offer.
You’re missing 110F weather.
In the winter.
check housing price trend in Austin, that should tell you
lol yeah it’s back to prepandemic levels, sad to see those who r holding bags while Santa Clara county saw a jump in home prices by 14%
Big city? Hahahaha!!!! If you're fully remote, why not move to a place that's not supposed to be a tech hub?
Suggest please :) I am late 20s, dude. Introverted but easy going. TC ~ 300k
It all depends on your hobbies, places you like, things you want to do, climate preferences, if you want to be close to a certain area of the country, proximity to family/friends, etc.
Austin gets really hot and Texas has questionable politics and a very different culture. If you like it there, move! Austin is awesome, it’s just not for everyone. But anyone telling you the Bay Area is objectively better is crazy.
We left the bay for san diego and love it. Spent 9 months in Austin during the pandemic and rushed back to Cali. Overall there are great things about Austin- food scene, killer margaritas, some nice natural features, but it doesn't compare to California.
Austin is over hyped expensive and hot. Lived there during the pandemic and it totally sucks. Move to bend or San Diego. Also property taxes are super high and everything is so expensive for the quality level. But yes great tacos and your place will be bigger. And you’ll need all that space because you can’t go outside 4-6 months a year.
Austin is a shit hole inside of an oven. Great place to spend approximately 2 days in. Living there is abhorrent. Terrible traffic, awful weather and tourist expensive.

There’s a reason everyone is moving out now that the pandemic is over. Austin is better but you’ll still be in Texas with corruption and ass backwards politics. Not much going on there but fReEdOm
Are they all moving out? Any actual data to back that up? As far as I can tell the growth in Austin is slowing but not reversing
Implying California doesn't have corruption and ass backwards politics lmao.
