I think software engineers who transition to Product manager roles are mediocre engineers When software engineer skills are so much in demand and you can create a larger impact, only a mediocre engineer would become product manager.
Or a SWE that just wants to chill, rest & vest, etc.
This
"Enjoy what you do">>>"have a larger impact"
I've heard that prod mgmnt is a good way to cto .. not sure that's true but would certainly be appealing to some
Isn’t being a PM easier. I would rather be that and just chill tbh
There are mediocre SWEs transitioning to PM as a way to unstuck themselves, but there are also good ex-SWE applying solid technical understanding to push innovation as PMs to greater stakeholders.
Not everyone wants to code all their life. People want to meet customers, understand their requirements, act as the bridge with development and take it easy after work hours. Some very good developers I know have switched to product management. On the flip side, I also know several very senior engineers and managers who pivoted to product management because they weren’t good technically. So, both reasons are possible.
Bruh we know. That’s why we’re trying to switch to make something of ourselves.
PMs call the shots, SWEs do jira tickets. We’re not the same 💁♂️ SWEs have a ceiling, most will stay at IC roles for a long time and won’t grow to an executive level role. PMs have more growth opportunities and can grow to an executive level much faster than SWEs. I went from SWE > PM > Founder and 10x’d my TC 🚀
Hey crypto, how did you move from SWE to PM? I’m interested in making the same move soon. I only recently started in software dev and I know this isn’t where I do my best. Is it better to have a set number of years of experience before moving?
It's hard to keep up with tech after certain age, with kids etc. Good engineers become good at working with people and find PM or EM roles to be better for themselves long term, from career growth perspective.
Who cares? They can be mediocre engineers and great pm.
