Evaluating two offers for a summer 2023 internship. One with P&G which pays a good amount more than Nike but located in Cincinnati and I have heard not great things about work life balance which is what I am curious about and the company culture? This role is in Consumer and Market Knowledge. Another offer from Nike, pays less, located in Portland Oregon. This role is in Global Operations and Logistics. I am not exactly sure what I want to do longterm really so I am just hoping to get experience at a company that has a good company culture and work life balance, and I could advance my career at. I am an undergraduate student. I love to run and spend a lot of free time doing that and hiking so something about Portland appeals to me more so than Ohio but the money P&G is offering is important given I am a first generation college student and I hear that P&G has so many opportunities but I am not sure what to do. #nike #p&g #proctorandgamble #operations #intern2023 #internship #supplychain #logistics #data
P&G role isn’t focused on Supply Chain, so if that’s the direction you’re going, better to get experience at Nike.
Assuming you're undergraduate, my advice is to forget about work life balance and culture. Your career hasn't started and there will be plenty of time for that stuff later. I recommend Nike due to the role focusing on supply chain and logistics. Roll up your sleeves, get you hands dirty in whatever you can, work, work, work.
Don't listen to this. Draw boundaries early in career and make it a habit.
For sure Nike for an internship but I would rather end up at P&G for a full time position at this time. Nike would be a blast to work at but I think you would get a lot better exposure to diverse product lines at P&G. Keep in mind that we are going into an economic downturn and that P&G has a much better balance sheet than nike and is consumer staples whereas Nike is consumer discretionary.
This 100%. Assuming this internship leads to full time employment, you'll want to work for the more resilient company. In a recession people will still buy shampoo and soap, but will cut back on buying $200 shoes. Also Nike has a history of regular layoffs so I'd expect a downsizing once the US is fully in recession.
Nike doesn’t have a history of layoffs. What are you talking about? Every few years we reduce our contractor headcount but if you’re FTE it’s a near guaranteed spot. There was one big layoff when they merged our two near-duplicate tech orgs.
I have interviewed with both... My initial impression is Nike is more team dependent while P&G have better processes to manage people (in a good way). Also, Nike has a fair amount of layoffs every now and then. Change a VP and you should expect a lot of chairs moving
I have personally found P&G to be a great company to start my career. Great environment to push yourself to your limits and find your strengths and weaknesses. It’s a company that definitely stands out on your resume. There’s a reason they have been as resilient as they are during this economic downturn. They push you, but it’s a necessary push to stay competitive during these times
I would do P&G honestly. Portland is expensive as hell, Cincinnati is not. CMK org will work your ass off but it's also an amazing place to learn. Nike is pretty political in a way that P&G is not. Plus P&G dumped billions into make Cincinnati less sucky so it's not that bad anymore, parts of it are actually pretty cool.
Better for leadership training
Nike’s internship program is a blast. 50% of what you’ll do isn’t even related to what team you’re on.
