Recently joined Microsoft IDC, got RSUs and ESPP option. Please help with following: 1. I have to choose between Fidelity and Morgan Stanely as my broker for RSU. What is the best option considering that I will hold my RSUs for longer time (buy low sell high)? 2. Should I enrol in ESPP? What's your view on profits/ taxation? Can you elaborate on how ESPP is taxed? Is this investment worth it? 3. What about the AMEX business card? For what things you use it? Do you have to payback the spent amount when you leave? 1. Fidelity is generally the preferred broker. Youāll find a detailed comparison on our internal pages. Only Fidelity supports ESPP, so if you pick Morgan Stanley your RSU and ESPP will be in different accounts. 2. If you donāt like free money, donāt go for ESPP. Monthly contributions are picked out of your post-tax income and if you decide to hold your ESPP grant for a long time, then capital gains will obviously apply. A lot of people will sell their ESPP immediately so that way your capital gains is almost nil and you donāt have too much of your NW in MSFT. 3. AMEX currently has a massive backlog and no new personal use cards are being given out in India.
Isn't it better to hold espp and sell it after 2 years tax wise? LTCG is 20% while if you sell immediately tax rate would be as your salary bracket(30%or more)
1. Choose fidelity always. 2. the ESPP is surely worth it as you get the stock at a discount . Unless the company's results keep going drastically down. I see no reason not to opt for it. So go for it and consider it a retirement thingy . 3. AMEX is for official use only . So you use it when you go on client visit , or you travel to Redmond or any other MS office or any office related trip , morale events for the team. And then you reconcile the ledger in expenses application to submit a claim internally after which your org will pay that automatically . If you spend some thing on amex and forget to add that expense claim within 60 days you may end up in a situation where this amount may get deducted from your salary . Ideally this does not happen and most managers and HR do help getting this sorted but I know a few people for whom managers were terrible and they did not even reach out to HR when their reportee new hires missed adding the expense in the system. So be careful. Don't use it for personal use . You can be fired for the same.
