I was impacted by Meta layoffs. I was an IC E4. Is booking.com good to join, or it is like career downgrade since joining after Meta? Note: Need to relocate to other country to join booking. I will be on Visa. I am based in India. So it's risky also. They are considering me for SDE 2 role. YOE: 7 TC: 0
Downgrade
Hmm. Rather I will wait for good company then.
Why exactly is it a downgrade? I mean, Booking.com pays one of the best salaries in Europe, right? What other companies are considered to be at Meta's level other than the rest of the FAANG? (I want to know because I had an offer with Booking.com and kind of wanted to join it.)
I just heard that it's downgrade after FAANG. Frankly speaking I am also willing to join it as it pays well and can explore Europe. So I am confused, that's why I posted this. If some company pays well who cares about other things, I mean we have seen FAANG doing layoffs like we are nothing to them. So I have decided from now on I will only work for money and enjoy life. I stated my concern thinking if it's downgrade and that's what recruiter thinks, I will not get any calls in future from recruiters. Mainly because of tech stack. What if we don't learn anything there.
Are you joining Software Engineer role?
Lol…there is no such “downgrade” concept at all.
Title, position, etc is overrated IMO. $$$ is what matters end of the day to keep you going.
It's funny how FAANG employees saying it's not downgrade (including me) and others saying it's downgrade. FAANG people really learnt the lesson. 😅
Just asking, are you based in London ? If yes then booking has their tech hub there as well. Dm to discuss more
No. I am based in India.
Bruh if you have enough savings or talent to worry about downgrade or not in this situation then please join world’s best employer and company 🍌
My only concern is will I be able to switch to other good companies, will I get recruiter calls afterwards also? Otherwise I am okay to join booking.com. I don't have any issues. I am not saying it's downgrading. I am just asking of people's opinion, about switching to non-FAANG from FAANG.
You will definitely get calls afterwards. If you just check booking alumni on linkedin you will find lot of them are currently working in google zurich, meta london, databricks etc
I'm a Meta refugee as well, and recently interviewed with Booking. Compensation-wise, it doesn't seem like they can compete with Meta in most markets, but I'd say they are one of the more competitive players in Europe. I work on the business-side so not exactly in the same boat as you, but also would have had to relocate, which was discussed early on in the interview process. I ended up not getting the offer, but I will say I was pretty impressed with the organization on the whole. I had a very positive experience with the recruiting team and people I interviewed with. If you want to work in Europe it seems like a great place to land.
There’s nothing like a “downgrade” here… if a company is ready to pay > FAANG then its actually an upgrade for you.
downgrade IMO. but good as a bridge to other companies :)
May be I will wait for good company then.
