Hi everyone, I recently got the offer for the Security Engineer Intern at Netflix. I’d love to learn more about the culture of Netflix, the technical challenges, and the career growth of the org (as I’m also looking to come back as a new grad if possible). Lastly, I have two quick questions: 1) How is Security Engineer vs. Software Engineer regard of technical & coding skills, especially for a blue team? 2) Is it easy to switch back to SWE (and even internal mobility at Netflix), in case I want to explore more in SWE? Thank you so much! #tech #security #netflix #intern TC: 0 as I’m in college
The security people handle a wide range of things. From securing api calls, data storage and all the way down to hardware executing in the TEE (trusted execution environment). Internal mobility at Netflix is less than at other companies, simply due to it being small (2k engineers in all). But it does happen. How much development vs analysis you’ll do depends on the particular position. Your best bet would be to ask to have an additional tank with the hiring manager and ask them these questions directly. The security folks are all very smart and very good at their jobs. Good luck! Also, since this is an intern spot your not locked into the job. I’ve seen several interns change groups when they’ve come on full time. But again, ask the hiring manager. Worst case, it’s Netflix. Internships here are very hard to land. They’ll look good on your resume which is 3/4 if the reason to do one anyway.
