I am looking at the tickets to go to South Asia in a couple months and the cheapest option is Air India via a stop at Delhi. The next cheapest looks like Qatar Airways which will be about $2K more for the family. Layover times are also ideal with Air India vs Qatar, like 2-3hrs in Delhi vs 9-14hrs in Doha. But seeing some of the comments online about Air India is giving me a pause. We will be traveling with a toddler and an infant. Folks who have travelled this SFO-DEL Air India route, how has your experience been? We don’t care much about onboard meals or entertainment. But care about seat comfort and cleanliness, and on-time departures.
The SFO route is actually not that bad. ORD DEL is by far the worst
Remember, people only come online when they have a bad experience.
I have always had probs with them Least was when TV wasnt working on B class and air hostess drank liquor and put it on me Worst was they cancel one leg without telling and we discovering in the airport and they will never pick phone Good luck I hope it will be better for you
How can they cancel leg ? Surprised. Was it your leg or their ?
The SFO DEL route is bonkers. Why do you want to sit in the same chair for 16 hours? At least when I flew Air India pre-Tata, the service and equipment quality were garbage. ALSO, why the fuck are you flying to India with a toddler and infant? Just avoid going until they get older.
16 hours is better than 20 hours with 1 stop with possibly going thru security again and waking up the kids during the stop and repacking the cabin bags and making kids go thru security again. Better to go with a toddler and infant than let life just go by staying home all the time.
Because 1 15hr flight is better than 2 8-9hr flights with 4-12hr layover time!!! With every extra flight you are statistically increasing the likelihood of delays, missed connections, lost baggage etc. always prefer longer direct flights over layovers. Also, final destination is not India and like the other PP said, always better to start travelling when your kids are young. We love travel and exploring and didn’t stop it once we had kids. Our toddler is already a very experienced traveller.
I have flown SFO - DEL in AI many times. AI 184 has the newer Delta leased aircraft with better seats and IFE. Avoid 174 as it still has older B777 body
I only see 777s in this route for both 174 and 184. Do you mean 184 is a newer delta 777?
It depends on the day tbh. I have had both bad and good experiences
Is Sunday good ?
Is final destination delhi ?
No. Just transiting through Delhi.
Luggage check in again required when Delhi is first post of entry and if final destination elsewhere within India
If flight has premium economy then it is upgraded planes from Delta. This is for flights from NY and NJ
USB ports or lights or flight entertainment don't work. But their seat pitch and width is better than most other airlines. Or probably better than all airlines for economy seats.
Air India is upgrading their fleet. Most planes are still old which are extremely bad. Some planes are new which are alright. So booking Air India is a hit or miss experience.
Is there a way to figure this out by looking at the flight details? Like date, route, plane?
Look at the planes they fly on that route (flight number and flight radar website) if they are 787s or 350s they are new planes. 777 is the old plane, you can avoid this
