I’m on the cusp of completing my top school PhD in Applied Physics (due June 2024) and was engaged as an AI Resident at Google, with prior ML internship experience at a YC-backed startup. Aiming for ML Researcher/Engineer positions in AI firms (like OpenAI, Anthropic), hedge funds (such as Citadel, Jane Street), or other prominent tech companies. I'm exploring the possibility of referrals and would be grateful for any assistance or insights in this regard! Also, want to ask for advice on when to commence applications for full-time roles, given my graduation date. Appreciate all your guidance!
Can your work lead to revenue in the next 6 months? If not your best bet is to forget all about research and begin working in a role that generates revenue. Otherwise stick to academia for low wages to keep working on papers with no revenue potential. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing just the reality of todays market.
It sounds like bad thing though🥲
Yeah sorry the PhD was a waste. I did the same thing. Just accept it can get you interviews more easily, or join a government contractor or national lab. The high income you seek has nothing to do with research and everything to do with aptitude at performing an income driving task.
You sound delusional. Any jobs, not just top ones, are incredibly hard to get for someone with no full-time non-internship industry work experience. Especially if your PhD is in physics and not in computer science.
The quant recruiting cycle for 2024 grads is underway already. Try applying to these places, you don’t need referrals. But you may be a bit late in the cycle. If you’re an American citizen/GC holder then target the 2025 quant incoming class and spend your time preparing for interviews, until then. Apps should open next July.
Create LinkedIn profile if not already. Start networking withTop AI folks. Publish your work/white-papers/research etc. Companies will start reaching out to you. Most of the senior level AI job positions has JD matching to your profile. And when you get a job please refer me. 😀
So helpful! Many thanks! 🙌
