I am a staff engineer at a Series C startup, and I often enjoy helping other engineers, for example, code reviews and listening to their concerns. I'm considering whether I am ready to apply for a manager position. When did you know you were ready? Has anyone returned to an IC role after trying a manager position?
I've encountered bad managers and believed I could do much better. That is why I decided to become a leader. Stepping into a new area, I studied extensively by reading books and watching talks from experienced leaders. Here are some things to consider: - Why do you want to be a manager? - Who was your best manager? Do you believe you can eventually be like them? - Are you a good communicator and listener? Will you be able to say no to other business and product teams for your team? - Will you be able to take responsibility for your team members' mistakes? - Are you ready to give up some or all of your coding time? Thank you. This is very helpful.
