Thinking about rolling over a 401k from my previous job from Vanguard to Fidelity. When you do the rollover, do you lose the return on investment data that you have? Or does that info get transferred to the new broker so you can continue tracking total returns?
There is a big loophole here that you can exploit. Do some research. Tracking your investment is not a big deal. You can do it with small amount of effort. It’s the taxes you pay that matter.
What loophole?
This was a few years ago, I asked Charles Schwab to handle it for me (the rollover was from Vanguard 401k to Charles Schwab IRA). I just provided them with the account number and stuff, and they did the rest. I asked for the index funds to be liquidated, but the stocks to be transferred over. So I received some cash and stocks in my IRA. If I recall correctly the cost basis on the stocks was initially messed up, but Vanguard provided the relevant information and Charles Schwab got it fixed. Not sure if that answers your question.
You can always do it yourself but I doubt it would transfer over. They just send a check with value of acct. honestly there’s not really a great reason to roll over from vanguard to fidelity, both have pretty low fees regardless.
I see. The rollover is really just me looking to consolidate accounts so I don't have to stare at as many lines on Mint. Fewer places to track my money means less headspace it's taking up. No other reason.
