People who are in 45+ , how are you making career choices? I believe its difficult to be tech savvy when getting older and struggling phase starts. Even best athletes cant perform after some time. I met someone other day and he said … we eventually need to slow down and take an easy job. He ( was in 60s) moved from tech to non tech… Staying in tech longer is very difficult IMHO. Tech these days, unlike 10-20 years back, is difficult and stressful. Wondering what other folks think… TC 210
What I love and am fulfilled by has evolved over my 26 yrs in tech. The first 8 years was product focused (game developer and automation), then I loved process more (TPM at MS for 9 years), then I pivoted to loving leadership and growing people (4 years as Eng Mgr). I turn 50 this year. Three years ago I followed the money to Coinbase but only stayed for a year. Each person has their own path. For me it's career coaching, as it combines 17 yrs of coaching experience with my background in tech. IC roles are harder to land (not impossible) above 45 yrs old in bigger tech / FAANG level. I typically advise finding your backup exit strategy (TPM, Manager) by 45 yrs old. There are exceptions but your ability to get rehired elsewhere starts dropping. The best defense is a good offense.
If you’re not retired by 45, you messed up somewhere.
Was working for cheap for many years without knowing. Did not know faang paid so much more. Cracking faang was easier in past. Difficult now with so much competition.
By 45 you should be FI and have a few kids - so just enjoy your time with them while resting and vesting.
I’m 45+ and have FI but choose not to RE
Getting into management and climbing the ranks is key. You'll be an experienced leader vs. a washed up IC. Everyone is different, but if you want corporate to remain an option you need to start accumulating people leadership experience in your 30s. Either way, building NW/passive income will help shield against the inevitable.
You know, "developer" isn't the only job in tech.

Not being “tech savvy” is a thing of boomers and older. Millennials grew up with technology, they and everyone younger sees it as normal to learn the newest tech.
