I have 1 semester of college left. The SWE market is significantly worse than prepandemic levels, The new grad market is significantly worse especially given how many new students flocked into CS due to the pandemic and life of an SWE tiktoks in the past couple of years. I have 2 MANGAM internships but I also know graduates with more who didn't manage to amass a single new grad offer. I am super worried I won't get a role once I start applying. What advice do you all have for me as I embark on this last of Chapter of college?
Take a lower paying job and you can always keep applying to big tech. Look at niche jobs like ones that require a security clearance in government or defense. Having a clearance could help when applying to some big tech positions in Microsoft or Amazon.
Thanks for the advice 🤠. Will give it a shot.
yeah, but defense is not the most stable right now which might surprise people. we are having layoffs right now hopefully you can get a position with at least top secret or TS/SCI, that's the bar for cleared roles at Azure/AWS/OCI
Not many people are ready to admit it, but, tech jobs have peaked. Jobs will remain, however, with Gen Ai and offshoring, I doubt writing CRUD wrappers will remain a high-paying job for long
The majority of the folks do that
Calm down - try to get a job and in parallel apply to a masters program. If you don’t get a good job then stay an extra year and get a masters degree. Proven effective strategy during the 2008 financial crisis
Thanks for the advice, 🙂
New grads have such unrealistic expectations after years of free money. Early in my career I worked like a dog for peanuts… I didn’t even get into big tech till 7 YOE.
And my father had to walk to school uphill both ways under a blazing desert sun through knee deep snow. FFS dude the kid is asking a question and u r just whining about next generation
The point is that my experience is actually more normal than the last 5 years of getting a high paying job with low responsibilities right after college. Last 5 years were unique and those times aren’t coming back
It took me 1 year after graduation to land a role. For others it took longer. This was in 2021. My advice is to keep trying to find a job no matter how long it takes. If you have parents that you can move back in with, do that.
Notice how it seems like jobs went to 0? Yes, there are fewer jobs than there was with free money but jobs are still there. It will probably bounce back to pre pandemic era.
I'd say play the numbers game, send a 50 applications a day and do it week after week. As my buddy said to me when i was looking for a job during a recession "If you send enough applications, it is statistically improbable for you to fail to get absolutely every job" Oh and dont be shy to ask for referrals, people hand them out like candy and almost always they will be glad that you asked. Best of luck man.
You're comparing a massive hiring surge over those years to a somewhat nominal level. There are still plenty of jobs.
If you're not ready to code in a basement for peanuts then you should have never gotten into CS. Be ready to do whatever it takes to get any job and fancy titles and companies will come.
The only right advice was to apply last semester lol?… Not sure why one would wait until their last semester to start applying, but good luck
New grad positions required one to graduate by summer 2024. I was simply ineligible to apply.
Ah that’s unfortunate. Most I know apply almost a year in advance.
