He says with the advancement AI, human language is the coding language and programmers’ roles in the society are just old artifacts of the gap that we had pre AI-era
Alright time to fold my table and leave then
Programming is inhumane job anyway haha
We'll get there in a few years, but we're not there yet. From that point on we'll all effectively be PMs
https://nvidia.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/NVIDIAExternalCareerSite/job/US-CA-Santa-Clara/Web-Application-Software-Engineer---New-College-Grad-2024_JR1979847 Nice. Why is it that these ceos never put their money where their mouth is? Cancel all your SWE roles. I didn't even find a specialized embedded role or driver role. I literally picked an intern web dev role at this company.
Tbh, he could be referring to the 2100s.
What OP stated, Huang has never said. It's a misquote. That said, I believe developer jobs of today are 100% dead in 10 years. I would bet my life savings on it if I could profit off it. I know I'll already be retired so I don't care. Many of the things that developers make applications for will be replaced by an AI that handles the entire process without code ever getting involved. Very skilled developers will still exist, but the current ecosystem of pumping out college grads every year is a silly dream. The number of programmer jobs will be stripped. Companies don't admit when current layoffs are due to AI systems already in place. Ask why that is.
If AI is going to do everything, then we are truly at dawn of one person corporations. Basically, tell the AI to create a $1 billion business, it will just do it. Engineers, Marketers, Sales, Ops, HR will soon become artifacts of a bygone era.
Should I switch to PM role who manage these programmers?
Guess Nvidia can layoff all their driver engineers then 🤷
Yeah, just ask gpt to write next version of cuda and patent excluding enhancement to cuDNN. It’s not that easy. What LLM have done is create automation/simplification of searching stack overflow and copy pasting. That’s great, but the reliability is sus and LLM generated content on the web is making even the internet unreliable.
People will still be developing software. It just might be with AI tooling instead of writing code.
You're overestimating the need for software that a developer controls. LAM, if it is perfected, will make the software irrelevant, as the AI does all the software work behind the scenes to the user. No one will even see the software.
What I’m saying is that anyone who translates businesses requirements into software is a developer regardless if they use code or an AI.
I guess he’s right for a certain public. Some people will probably be interacting only with AIs from now on, not with SWEs. SWE will be more niche and pay even better than before.
Pack up boys. Learn other skills
How long do you think we have? I was hoping to last another 9 years before our AI overlords took over but things are looking more grim every day. It's not the public AI presentations I'm worried about, it's what they aren't showing us. A few companies have very secret LAM projects in play...
I think probably still 5 years but once system design is standardized and commoditized, it is a matter of time
