But we do need more regulations about who can and cannot do the job. The industry would not grow so fast (and we wouldn't have layoffs) if companies didn't hire little Joe who just came from a bootcamp and can barely write code, or little Janice who needs to increase diversity stats. Companies were throwing money left and right. And then, good performers get f**** up. We need something that lawyers and physicians have. Many people love to shit their jobs like we are not special. Well, guess what. The best/smartest kids in my class haven't studied medicine or law. They've studied math, physics or computer science. We might not save lives, but we deserve some dignity. We cannot leetcode until we die at 65. Just because you can LC at 25 against a bunch of kids who only know how to LC, that doesn't mean you will be able to do the same at 35. I spent a year preparing for G interviews, I passed them, I even got team matched, but the offer will get rescinded. For what? Why do we need LC? To change some configs in GCP? OpenAI can do that for us anyway. So can solve LC. So can read radiology images. But doctors will not give their jobs away. Not because of a union, but regulations. Simply, we need to take our jobs back.
Well, our employers are obviously coordinating their layoffs with each other to flood the market.
Agreed. We need a standardized exam like the FE exam, bar exam, etc. to eliminate the need to LC for every job interview. It's a waste of everyone's time. Imagine if doctors and lawyers had to take their exams every time they wanted a new job.
^ this This standardized exam needs to be harder and broader than LC, but it needs to be good at targeting software engineering skills.

Lol what? I’m not for a software engineer union but not for whatever this crap is either.
What an idiotic take. The only reason you all make 300k+ is because it’s unregulated. Go to the EU and make 70k if you want regulations. There’s a reason the US innovates for the entire world.
Software jobs are not regulated in EU. The US actually has more regulations about many things. EU has regulations about some jobs, but those jobs are usually paid well. Source: Born and raised in EU.
Hmm I could be wrong but I’ve heard differently from other people who live in the EU. As I see it, just their vacation policies alone eat into your org’s budget and part of your pay gets used to hire backup. I’ve talked to EU business owners who moved their companies here because they said they couldn’t deal with the regulations there. Again, I could be wrong, but I feel like you’re overestimating US regulations.. you can do whatever you want and start businesses ridiculously fast especially in states like Texas or Florida or Arizona from what I’ve seen. Perhaps it’s possible that since you’re from there, you’re used to those regulations?
So... Standardization is fine and all at a minimal level. Finding leet algorithms and what not is trivial for this standardization. Once you get past that to understand business requirements and understanding unsaid requirements, I think you would lose effectiveness of your standardized test... As all great plans go on 'It depends'.
We absolutely do need a union. These companies are nothing without engineering talent, they need to figure that out.
And you are telling everyone, you do God's work in those SWE sweatshops. If a LC monkey without a Grad School education can compete with you with just a stupid bootcamp, it ain't that difficult.
Hmm.. I mean it’s theoretically possible but I wouldn’t say it’s easy or possible to do it as effectively without years of learning. The same is true for a lot of “specialized” professions. We have access to more resources and books than ever in this age. I could become an economist without a degree for example..
Dumb people doing dumb things. If you want to compete for top 💵 you will do what the ring master said otherwise someone else will. That's called a free market, not a fair market but a free market.
Unions are necessary, until folks realize that thing will be like this. Corporations will do whatever they want. I rather a corrupt union than a corrupt organization.
No, they're not. We just need better regulations.
Who’s going to regulate stuff? On a micro scale, Companies have HR and HR works for the company. Government lobbying happens from these corporations. Workers don’t get a say in anything.
